Another protection option, especially when thinking about a Consumer Unit change, is to consider fitting RCBO’s for all circuits. An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) is a combination of a Circuit Breaker and an RCD and features both overcurrent protection and earth fault protection in a single enclosed device.
The main benefit of using RCBO’s is that each circuit is individually protected and therefore when a fault occurs you know exactly which circuit is causing the problem. There would be no nuisance tripping of other circuits as there would be on a split-load RCD board, hence inconvenience is kept to a minimum.
RCBO's are a slightly more expensive option but are superior to a split-load arrangement and, once installed, can save you time and money in relation to future call-out charges and fault finding when a problem occurs.
